I HAD A DREAM THAT CHANGED MY LIFE

HM. i dont know much on how to put my words or thoughts on paper. I hate writing and reading. but i had this dream…i would like to write down so i wont forget. I think i know how to solve many of the worlds problems. Its just a thought. a simple thought. Maybe it will work and maybe it wont. Its called: Quantitative genetics, genomics, and the future of plant breeding.

NOW, sound boring doesnt it? it is….the job is. but i believe its something thats gonna change the world we live in.

care to explain mafla? well…. what it is is basically plant breeding. We’ve done it for almost 1000 years. weve made potatoes white from the inside, even though they were orange. Weve made carrots orange, even though they were purple :O. We’ve genetically modified everything in plants, even corn to make it softer, taller and bigger. We’ve made trees stronger. scientists made wood that it virually indestructible to critters, and water proof! SO…(digressing)…

what was my dream…

what if… we can use that manipulation of plants…and turn them into objects humans use everyday? (the big epiphany :])

if we can plants bigger, harder, stronger, different shapes, colors and sizes… cant we make something useful of it?

my first example was a ladder. I know…silly example… but what if instead of making a ladder out of wood or aluminum… we can just grow a plant that rises in the form or a ladder? (you must be thinking mafla is crazy..i dont care)

just picture it… instead of making it..we can grow it. meanwhile were releasing oxygen into the air…instead of using a gas-powered chainsaw to kill a tree.

now, besides a ladder, what else can you make? HMM…. with todays technology… the better question is what CAN’T you make?

you see, the world was once formed of just wood and stone. Then, about 200 years ago… we thought it would be a good idea to make stuff of metals. I’m not saying its bad, im saying it was such a big transformation that… look at where we are today. What isnt made of steel, aluminum, iron, etc?

CARS, HOUSES, BUILDINGS…many things depend on this

now… cars. my definition of a car: a metal box with 4 wheels on it. Need I say more? thats ALL it is. Metal parts blended and put together perfectly to make a combustion-powered trifecta machine. Problem is… burns Gasoline which in turn produces carbon-dioxide. Now im no Earth freak, but global-waring is real. And i really dont care, seriously.

can you imagine what it would be like…to have a car… that instead of turning it on, you just pull a lever r something and it moves? How? energy transferred from the sun. Same thing solar panels do, but a plant can do better. This is how it can change the world. We wont have an energy crisis, we wont have an economic crisis. Not as long as we have plants.

I’ll continue writing down more examples…logical examples. Hopefully someone will understand. Maybe not. Karthika didnt understand. I thought she was naive. maybe she was just being real.

But my dream… a world, based on plants. Instead of driving a metal box, we can grow car parts out of the ground. Instead of houses being built, we can grow foundations with extra-strength wood. Instead of using gas-power engines, we can create a plant that transfers the sun’s energy into renewable power. Just a rough draft of what I think. Make your mind wrap around the idea. Maybe someday this idea will make me the person who changes the world. Maybe, just maybe, i can change how the world looks today.

And thanks Carol, for reminding me to write down what i think. I spent the whole day researching this, and i think its something that is gonna be serious in the future.

hi carol!
